Symptom: The PerformanceGuard agent icon Image Modified (or Image Modified in newer agent versions) doesn't appear in the computer's notification area (also known as system tray) after the agent has been installed.

Note

The icon is by default not shown. This is based on the assumption that you don't necessarily want your end users to be able to view the status and/or details of their agents. You can easily enable the icon if required. See the last of the possible causes in the following.

Possible Causes and Solutions

Even if the agent icon is meant to be shown on users' computers, there may be several reasons why it isn't:

  • Agent hasn't been in contact with server yet
The icon isn't shown until the agent has been in contact with the server for the first time. Therefore, if you install agents before you install the server, the icon isn't shown until you get the server up and running.

  • Agent is old
For agent versions 3.1.7 to 3.3.7, the agent by default waits three minutes before starting. This can be configured by installing with the parameter ssd=X, where X is the number of seconds to wait. For later versions, the agent by default doesn't wait.

  • Remote Desktop
If you are using a Remote Desktop connection (also known as Terminal Services), the agent icon doesn't appear over the Remote Desktop connection. You can verify that the agent is actually running by opening the Task Manager and looking for PerformanceGuard Agent process. It's called GuardAgent....exe.

  • The agent isn't running
To check: Open the Task Manager, and check that the GuardAgent....exe process is running.
Select Image Added/Start, type services.msc and press ENTER. Then start the PerformanceGuard Agent service.

  • The agent icon has been disabled
To verify in the PerformanceGuard web interface, select ADMINISTRATION > Agent Configuration > Configurations. You can only do this if you're a PerformanceGuard administrator. Then, in the table, find the agent configuration group to which the affected agent belongs, and click the Edit link in the table's Configuration column. Then, on the Agent Configuration tab, scroll down to the User Interface section, and verify whether the Enable Task Bar Icon setting is enabled or not.

    - or -

Open the Registry Editor and check the value of HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\PremiTech\E2EAgent\Configuration. This is a long string which contains the GUIMode keyword. An example of GUIMode is GUIMode=Icon Window NoExit AutoHide SendReport. If it contains the word NoIcon, the icon is disabled. You can fix this by doing the following:

    • Stop the PerformanceGuard Agent service

    • Change NoIcon to Icon in the registry.

    • Start the PerformanceGuard Agent service
