The Performance Counters graph (ANALYZE > Computers > Performance Counters) lets you view details about the current and historical performance of your organization's computers:

  • Standard performance counters, such as CPU usage, startup times and much more
  • Details about processes running on the selected computer, by process name as well as by process ID

    Note
    iconfalse
IP data process information is not collected on computers that run Windows XP.
  • Custom counters, that is data collected by the custom counters that you have yourself set up in PerformanceGuard

The graph is highly dynamic and interactive: You can add data from multiple computers, you can mix different types of data (from the Standard Counters, Processes and Custom Counters tabs) on the same graph, you can zoom in on areas of interest, etc. You can view up to five counters on the graph at a time.

If you prefer it, you can also search for agent IDs. Agent IDs are displayed to the right of computer names in search results.
  2. When you have selected a computer, select the counter (for example cpu-usage) that you want to view on the graph.
  3. Click the ADD TO CHART button. It may occasionally take a few seconds before the selected counter appears on the graph.

If some of your counters overlap and are difficult to view, you can toggle the display of each counter off and on if you click the name of the counter in the legend area below the chart. Learn more about this, how to zoom, how to add this type of chart to reports, etc.

    titleWhat's a process ID?

...

  1. It's a number used by the operating system to identify individual processes. This is relevant because some processes may have several instances running at the same time. For example, there are often several instances of processes used for internet browsing and of svchost, which is a system process designed for hosting multiple Windows services).

  2. Select the required counter (for example cpuAvg) that you want to view on the graph.
  3. Click the ADD TO CHART button. It may occasionally take a few seconds before the selected counter appears on the graph.

titleCan I mix process name and process ID data?

...

  1. Yes. For example, you can add a metric regarding the svchost process as such (by process name), and then you can add a metric regarding a specific instance of svchost (by process ID, for example svchost - PS740). This can be useful, because it lets you compare specific data (the specific svchost process ID) with more general data (svchost as such).

Custom Counters

The types of data that you can select on Custom Counters tab are the types of data collected by the custom counters that you have yourself set up in PerformanceGuard; see Custom Counter Templates: Collect Data from Any Windows Performance Counter.

  1. Click the legend that represents the required data, and then click the CHANGE Y-MIN AND Y-MAX button.

Image Removed

  1. Specify required minimum and maximum values (both are required).
  2. Click the SET button.

Note that the Y-axis change only affects the selected data. If your graph includes other data, that data won't be affected, but you can of course change the Y-axis interval for other data separately.
To reset a changed Y-axis interval to its default values, click the legend that represents the required data, and then click the UNSET Y-MIN AND Y-MAX button.
All Data on Graph
When you want to compare the performance counters on your graph, it sometimes makes sense to use the same Y-axis range for all the counters:

  1. Click the customize y-axis button in the bar below the graph:

  1. Specify required minimum and maximum values (both are required).
  2. Click the SET button.

To reset the y-axis to its default value, click the customize y-axis button again and then click the RESET button.
Remove Lines that Connect Points
Data points are by default connected by lines. If required, you can remove the connecting lines for individual data: Click the legend that represents the required data, and then click the DO NOT CONNECT POINTS button.

To connect points again, click the legend that represents the required data, and then click the CONNECT POINTS button.
Show Peaks, Minimums and Maximums
The graph by default shows average data. If you also want to view peaks, minimums and maximums, you can easily toggle that on and off for individual data as well as for all data on your graph.

Individual Data

  1. Click the legend that represents the required data.

  1. Click the ENABLE Average TO Peak AREA SERIES button.

Depending on the data, the button may also be called ENABLE Low TO Peak AREA SERIES or ENABLE Min TO Max AREA SERIES and may show minimum as well as maximum peaks.
To remove the peak data, click the legend that represents the required data, and then click the DISABLE Average/Low TO Peak AREA SERIES button (again the button may have another name depending on the data).
All Data on Graph
To toggle peaks, etc. on and off for all data on your graph, click the toggle area chart button in the bar below the graph:

Use Graph Elsewhere
If you want to quickly share the graph with colleagues, or include it a report to top management, customers or similar, you can easily do so:
Export Graph
To quickly export the graph in .png or .pdf format, click the download button in the bar below the graph:
Image Removed
The graph will be exported the way you that you view it. This means, for example, that if you have zoomed in on an area of the graph, it's only that area that'll be included in the export.
Add Graph to Report
You can quickly add the graph to an existing or new PerformanceGuard report:

  1. Click the plus button in the bar below the graph:

Image Removed

  1. Select the required report.

If the report doesn't exist yet, click the + New link. This will open a new window or tab for defining the new report. When you have defined the new report, you'll be able to select it.

  1. Specify a Header (required) and a Description (optional).
  2. Click the ADD TO REPORT button.
