Microsoft Teams
Why are Microsoft Teams and Teams Machine-Wide Installer different versions ?
That's one of the most common questions we get from our customers.
The reason must be found in the way that the Teams Machine-Wide Installer works.
Teams Machine-Wide Installer is installed by the Teams MSI file.
Microsoft has described how it works and that the MSI file can't be used to deploy updates on this page.
Microsoft confirms that Teams can't be updated by any software deployment tool on this page.
Â
Why don’t you just remove the Teams folder for all users to trigger an upgrade ?
The Teams process is almost always running and there is no way to reliably detect if a user is participating in a meeting at a given time.
Thus, if we remove Teams for all users, we might interrupt an important meeting and the users will not have Teams installed before their next login.
Â
Why are Teams Machine-Wide Installer newer than Microsoft Teams ?
If a newer version of Teams Machine-Wide Installer is installed on an endpoint where an older version of Microsoft Teams is already installed, Microsoft Teams is not updated by design, as described above.
Microsoft Teams will automatically update when Microsoft releases a new version of Teams - typically on the last Monday of each month.
Â
Why are Microsoft Teams newer than Teams Machine-Wide Installer ?
If Microsoft Teams has updated automatically after the installation of the Teams Machine-Wide Installer, the Microsoft Teams version might be newer than the Teams Machine-Wide Installer version.
